How to...laundry

Posted 5 years ago

Living on your own is a big step

Going from living with your parents or someone who does your Laundry to living on your own is a big step.

Almost every site on campus has its own Laundry facilities. Upon collecting your room keys, you will be informed which laundry you can access. If you have never done laundry for yourself, don't worry about it! We'll take you through step by step in this guide.

Laundry facilities are provided and managed by Washpoint.

How to use

  1. Choose a machine (washing machine or tumble dryer).
  2. Load the machine up to three-quarters full and close the door.
  3. Select your desired program on the machine’s LCD screen.
  4. Press ‘start’ on the machine.
  5. Make your payment at the laundry kiosk using a debit/credit card, or Apple/Google Pay.
  6. Visit www.washpoint.uk and type ‘Cardiff’ in the search bar to locate your laundry, look at usage information and check availability. Instructional posters will be on display inside every laundry.

Costs and Detergent

  • Wash (Auto-dose) – £3.30

Two thirds of the machines in every laundry will automatically dispense liquid detergent and fabric softener, so you do not need to add your own as well. This has been designed as the most cost effective and eco-friendly option for users. Just load up, pay at the kiosk and go!

  • Wash (Non auto-dose) – £3.00

If you would prefer to use your own detergent and fabric softener please use one of the labelled ‘non auto-dose’ machines, and add your soap as per the manufacturer's instructions. There will be non auto-dose machines available in every laundry.

  • Dry – £1.50

Tumble dryer use is a single cost per tumble. Please do not overload the machines and remove your clothes once the cycle is completed to free them up for other users.

Important Info:

  1. Empty all pockets before loading clothing into the washers/dryers.
  2. Take care not to overload the machines. The machines should not be more than three-quarters full.
  3. Only dry clothes using the dryers provided. Drying clothes in your bedroom can lead to damp problems and mould growth.
  4. Remove clothes as soon as the cycle has ended to free up machines for other users.
  5. Keep the laundry clean and tidy at all times and dispose of rubbish in the bins provided.
  6. If you no longer require items of clothing, please donate them via the Charity banks, which can be found on or near the majority of residence sites. Any items donated need to be clean and dry.
  7. The washers and dryers are pretty big, so we recommend you share it with a friend if you wash very frequently.
