Wellbeing Wednesday Workshops

This year, our colleagues in Health and Wellbeing will be running regular workshops for you in halls to focus on maintaining your wellbeing. These will be online for the first semester but will be moved in-person after Christmas. We've laid out each workshop and what it contains below so have a look through and book a place on any that interest you. We look forward to seeing you there!

Wellbeing Workshops 2021-22

Welcome to Wellbeing

This workshop provides an introduction to the counselling, health and wellbeing service and offers general wellbeing strategies that can be helpful when adapting to all the new, exciting and possibly overwhelming changes that come with starting university. This includes signposting to helpful resources, guidance on how to use the Student Life services and evidence-based strategies to manage your overall wellbeing.

Adapting to University Life

This workshop looks at wellbeing strategies to cope with university life,  deal with homesickness and manage your wellbeing at university during covid-19. While it’s common for some people to really enjoy and adapt easily to university life, it’s equally common to struggle with the changes and pressures of university life. Whether this comes from your course stress, difficulty building connections/making friends or from changes to your environment e.g. not being at home, this workshop aims to look at many ways you can maintain your wellbeing and adapt to your new journey at university.

Did I make the right Choice? Tools to deal with difficult decisions at University.

This workshop offers wellbeing strategies to deal with difficult decisions. We know that it’s common to wonder “did I make the right choice?” “Is this the right course for me?” “Should I stay at University?”. Therefore, this workshop focuses on managing symptoms of low mood and anxiety and provides skills to deal with rumination/unhelpful thoughts, problem solving, forming goals and creating realistic expectations while at university.

Managing Shyness & Social Anxiety

This workshop is aimed at helping you understand the process that contributes to and maintains your shyness and anxiety in social situations. It’s particularly common in your first year of university to develop concerns about connecting well with others “do they like me?” “maybe I shouldn’t have said that” “what if I don’t make friends?” You’ll be taught techniques and strategies to challenge and regain control over your anxious thoughts, build connections with others and develop good communication skills. These are skills that you can apply not only to improving social situations outside of your studies but will also aid you in your university and work career e.g. communicating in meetings.

Dealing with Stress & Building Resilience

This workshop is aimed at helping you manage symptoms of stress, low mood and anxiety. It helps you identify the signs and symptoms of stress and explore what maintains this cycle. It focuses on what helpful evidenced based tools can be used to break the stress cycle and build your resilience to cope with difficult experiences. These tools include managing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, reducing procrastination, increasing motivation, and building your own model of resilience.

Dealing with Exam Anxiety

This workshop is aimed at helping you manage symptoms of anxiety which often occur during exams or with high pressured situations. It will explore what anxiety looks like and how it is maintained. It will then focus on strategies you can use to manage anxiety. These will include tools for managing anxious or unhelpful patterns of thinking, exercises to relax when anxiety levels increase, and also ideas for changing unhelpful patterns of behaviour that maintain anxiety (e.g. avoidance, seeking reassurance, procrastination and over-preparing).This workshop will teach you effective strategies to gain control over your anxiety, enabling you to concentrate and think clearly when studying for and sitting your exams.

Guided Relaxation & Refocusing Session

This guided relaxation and refocusing session is separated into different sections providing you with a variety of techniques. It aims to provide you with some relaxation and refocusing tools that you would engage with live in the session. You’d also have these resources to take away and use as often as you’d like. This can help you to better manage any symptoms of stress, anxiety, sleep problems, panic etc.

Making Connections & Overcoming Loneliness

This workshops aims to help you understand what loneliness is and how to overcome it. It common when you attend university to be surrounded by people but still feel lonely. We want to support you in developing skills to connect well with others, understand what maintains loneliness, overcome barriers to feeling better and manage unhelpful thoughts so that you are able to feel more confident and feel in control of your wellbeing.

Managing your Mood

This workshop is aimed at helping you manage symptoms of low mood and depression. We explore what depression is, how depression can develop and what can maintain these symptoms. The workshop offers strategies for improving low mood, including ways to manage negative patterns of thinking, ways to change unhelpful behaviour, build motivation and ways to build a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
