Decorating your new room

Top tips from a current student

If you have just arrived in halls and they look very plain, don’t worry! You will feel at home in no time.

Photos and posters

You will likely have a notice board in your room that may look overwhelmingly empty at first.

Print photos of friends, family, pets, quotes, anything that brings a smile to your face. There is cheap photo printing in Boots in the city centre, maybe suggest the idea to your new flatmates and you can go together!

Lights

Unfortunately, you are not allowed plug-in fairy lights in halls. However, battery powered ones are fine!

In some halls, the big light in your room may be blindly bright, so a lamp with a softer tone may help the room feel cosy! There are so many different funky lights you can buy now: stars, sunset lights, disco lights- whatever takes your fancy!

Rugs and bedding

In my opinion, a rug makes a room look so much more homely. Make sure to choose cosy-looking bedding, and maybe even some cushions for that cosy vibe. You can get cheap rugs and beddings in shops like Lidl, TKMaxx, Ikea, as well as online.

Plants

Keeping a small plant on your windowsill can make a room feel more cosy, and it gives you something to look after. You can also get fake plants to decorate your room, if you don’t trust yourself to keep a plant alive, or you want to put it in areas that don’t get sunlight. Put it in a funky pot to brighten up your room!
