How to...laundry

By bzellie 20 Aug 2020

Going from living with your parents or someone who does your Laundry to living on your own is a big step.

Almost every site on campus has its own Laundry facilities. Upon collecting your room keys, you will be informed which laundry you can access. If you have never done laundry for yourself, don't worry about it! After reading this post, you should be able to do laundry with no help from anyone.

There are two ways to use the laundry facilities: by downloading the free Circuit App or purchasing a laundry card.

The App

  • Follow the instructions and set up your account before going to the laundry room.
  • Fill up your account with credit (minimum top-up is £5 each time).
  • 1 basic wash costs £3 and 1 dry costs £1.50.
  • You can use the app to pay for your laundry by scanning the washing machine's QR code and selecting your preferred programme.

Laundry Card

  • These can be purchased from a laundry card dispenser located at most Receptions during opening times (with the exception of University Hall located on ground floor corridor of Tower) for £1.50.
  • You create an account with Circuit, add credit and top-up at a card top-up machine at your laundry site.
  • See here for more information on how to purchase and use a Laundry card.

More things you need to know:

  • Buy some form of washing powder, liquid or 3-in-1 tablets.
  • Having a laundry basket makes it easier to move your clothes around.
  • Make sure you know where the laundry room is before doing laundry for your first time.
  • Make sure you have access to strong wifi/data as the app requires it to work.
  • If you face any technical problems, get in contact with Circuit themselves here
  • If you live a bit further away from your accommodation’s laundry room, you can use Circuit View to check the Laundry Machine status.

The washers and dryers are pretty big, so we recommend you share it with a friend if you wash very frequently.

To use the washers:

  1. Place the powder/liquid/tablets at the bottom of the washer drum.
  2. Put your clothes in the washing machine. Fill it up to about 80% full to get the best outcome. Preferably, do not mix white items with colored ones.
  3. Close the door.
  4. Open the app on your mobile phone and either scan the barcode on the machine or manually enter the machine number.
  5. You will then be asked to select the fabric. On the machine itself, there will be buttons which you can press to make a selection. If you are not sure what to select, there are posters in the laundry rooms which could help in making a decision.
  6. After making a selection, a time will pop up on the machine which you should make note of.
  7. Please pick up your clothes as soon as they are done to avoid inconveniencing other students waiting.

To use the dryers:

  1. Place your clothes in the dryer.
  2. There will be a little tray which you can see when you open the door of the dryer, which says on it “Make sure this is cleaned before using the dryer”. Make sure it is emptied before starting the drying cycle.
  3. Close the door.
  4. Open the app on your mobile phone and either scan the barcode on the machine or manually enter the machine number.
  5. You will then be asked to select the fabric. On the machine itself, there will be buttons which you can press to make a selection. If you are not sure what to select, there are posters in the laundry rooms which could help you in making a decision.
  6. After making a selection, a time will pop up on the machine which you should make note of.
  7. Please pick up your clothes as soon as they are done to avoid inconveniencing other students waiting.
